Why is the refeed phase important?

After a long EF, your body can’t just instantly switch back to normal eating. Multiple metabolic processes need to get restarted and recalibrated first.

This transition can take several days or even weeks depending on the duration of your EF.

Breaking your fast too quickly can cause multiple disruptions in your body’s biochemistry. Side effects like water retention, bloating, digestive upset and headaches are fairly common. That’s why you need to carefully plan and manage your refeed phase.

Should I worry about refeeding syndrome?

Refeeding syndrome is a serious health condition affecting malnourished patients after a period of starvation. Introducing food after a long period of fasting can cause abrupt metabolic shifts and biochemical disbalances. This in turn can lead to potential serious health problems if not addressed.

The actual refeeding syndrome is highly unlikely to occur after a well-managed electrolyte-supported EF regimen. But similar side effects can hit you in a milder form during your refeed.

How can I ensure a safe refeed phase?

Break your EF with something that’s super easy to digest. Bone broth is a popular option for the first meal. Gradually add small quantities of solid food. Avoid high-carb foods because insulin spikes can further disrupt your delicate metabolic balance at this stage.
